SUMMARY:EROTIC LYRICISM BY VIKTOR IHUMENTSEV
DESCRIPTION:For Artist’s Day\, the Municipal Gallery has prepared an exhibition marking the anniversary of the outstanding Ukrainian graphic artist Viktor Ihumentsev. Visitors will have an opportunity to see the graphic series “Erotic Lyricism”\, inspired by poems by Soviet poets.\n…We were promised the end of history. We believed and waited for borders to collapse\, identities and Otherness to disappear\, along with all the dangers they carried\, in unison with the demolition of old buildings that marked bygone eras. This illusion dissipated all too quickly\, forcing us to delve deeper\, inward\, to search there for roots and points of attachment\, to seek ourselves as part of a community\, shedding along the way all our fears and complexes of national inferiority…\n…If we focus on the artistic community\, Viktor Ihumentsev\, a graphic artist\, was among those connected to the eastern borderlands of our country\, and even the first glance at his black-and-white prints provides an answer to the question posed.\nIn the confident rhythm of lines and precise compositions\, we see images of Ukrainian villages with fields\, hills\, distant horizons\, and houses scattered around the Siverskyi Donets\, where agricultural labor\, war\, and festive mass celebrations intertwine in an inseparable cycle\, successively replacing one another. This may be Chervonyi Yar\, a village in the Luhansk region where Viktor Ihumentsev was born in 1939\, but it could also be any other Ukrainian village or town\, since they all share common visual archetypes\, common traumatic experiences of the past\, and common hopes.\nIn his memoirs\, Viktor Ihumentsev enthusiastically returns to his childhood\, describing the postwar everyday life he experienced surrounded by solitary women who were “majestic and powerful\, with unspent passion.” Their overflowing vitality might seem extremely difficult to convey through a dry graphic technique\, yet the artist accomplishes this task with remarkable skill\, allowing the female outlines to come alive\, constantly balancing between sensual femininity and powerful masculinity. Ihumentsev’s heroines involuntarily evoke in memory the poetic images of women in the works of Serhii Zhadan\, a voice of the present day who gave the East a voice and the possibility of self-reflective analysis. ..(…quote)\nIn other series of works\, women lose their materiality\, become elongated and transform into saints who have left the abstract\, flat space of icons in order to share the martyrdom of their people. They wander through the same spaces where we recently saw peaceful pastoral scenes\, marking irreparable losses\, but they do so silently\, through hints and half-tones.
