SUMMARY:EXHIBITION “F E R T I L I T Y” + PERFORMANCE “UNDERGROUND”
DESCRIPTION:In the “Fertility” series\, the artist turns to the mythology and everyday life of women in ancient Slavic culture in order to reconsider the role of women in contemporary society.\nHaving grown up in a matriarchal family\, for four years the artist has been photographing women from her immediate circle\, close relatives\, and daughters\, while also appearing as a subject in the series herself\, seeking to “relive” the experience of her ancestors\, to feel the “sacredness” of the worldview of a primordial woman\, and to trace her secret connection with the earth. To some extent an attempt at self-identification\, the “Fertility” series prompts the artist to reflect on the “female mission” and the intuitive aspect of female nature that has been lost with the development of civilization. The photographs not only reveal\, layer by layer\, the exposed texture of the female inner self\, but also expose the fragility of judgments about women’s purpose in the contemporary world.\nThe performance “Underground” continues the theme of female continuity and the sacred connection between woman and the earth. During the performance\, the artist remains underground\, from which a young fruit tree grows. In this way\, the artist visualizes\, on the one hand\, the natural connection between Mother Earth and the younger generation\, to whom she must pass on her strength and energy\, and\, on the other\, the sacrifice and humility of a woman who raises her offspring and is completely “immersed” in this process. The ritual of burial is known as an example of an ancient Slavic initiation tradition\, in which everything unnecessary dies away and the human essence is reborn. This practice is also used to work through fundamental fears and reveal a deeper sense of self.
