SUMMARY:HOW TO BE AN ARTIST IN UKRAINE?
DESCRIPTION:Lecture/artist talk “How to Be an Artist in Ukraine?” — by Polina Karpova\, Maria Kulikovska\, and Vova Vorotniov — artists who stayed in the United Kingdom as part of the British Council’s SWAP: UK/Ukraine art residency programme.\nVenue — HudpromLoft (8 Mystetstv St.\, Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts)\nPolina Karpova (b. 1992\, Kharkiv) — a Kharkiv artist working with photography. She graduated from the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts in 2013 with a Master’s degree in Art History. Karpova continues the tradition of the renowned Kharkiv School of Photography\, one of whose conceptual principles is an ironic view of the surroundings. She has been engaged in photography since 2009\, focusing on the exploration of unique human beauty and interaction with industrial urban landscapes. In October 2017\, Polina was in residence in Liverpool.\nMaria Kulikovska (b. 1988\, Kerch) — an artist\, architect\, actionist\, and curator. She graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv (Master of Architecture\, 2013) and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm (2016). In her intense performances\, Kulikovska explores not only the limitations and weakness of her own body\, but also the female body in public space. Her practice is also influenced by the political situation in Ukraine — she addresses issues of the conflict with Russia\, the annexation of her native Crimea\, and the problems of displaced persons. In September–October 2017\, Maria was in residence in Liverpool.\nVova Vorotniov (b. 1979\, Chervonohrad) — an artist who lives and works in Kyiv. His background includes the graffiti subculture and studies at the Faculty of Philosophy of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. Vorotniov works with photography\, installation\, public art\, performance\, and more. His broad range of interests includes issues of identity in contemporary Ukraine\, decommunization processes\, the (non)functioning of Soviet public space\, as well as\, for example\, flânerie and psychogeographic practices and the reactualization of local history museums in a contemporary context. In September–October 2017\, Vova was in residence in Liverpool.\nEight artists from Ukraine and the United Kingdom (Polina Karpova\, Maria Kulikovska\, Anton Lapov\, Vova Vorotniov; Kung Hwa Shon\, Stephen Sheehan\, Vicki Thornton\, Adam Walker) will show the results of their visual research at the final exhibition of the SWAP: UK/Ukraine 2017-2018 residency programme at YermilovCentre in Kharkiv from March 16 to April 15\, 2018.
