DESCRIPTION:Polish Institute in Kyiv\nKharkiv Municipal Gallery\ninvites you\nto a lecture by Krystyna Czerni as part of the “Open Archive” series\n“Jerzy Nowosielski — Icon Painter and Freethinker”\nDuring the lecture\, Krystyna Czerni will present the work of Jerzy Nowosielski (1923-2011)\, one of the most outstanding Polish painters of the second half of the 20th century. She will discuss his Ukrainian and ecclesiastical roots\, his most important sacred works\, and analyze the influence of icon painting on secular art.\nKrystyna Czerni is a writer\, critic and art historian. She works at the Institute of Art History at Jagiellonian University. Her research focuses on Polish art of the 19th and 20th centuries and sacred art. She is the author of numerous publications on the art of icon painter and thinker Jerzy Nowosielski\, including the collection of interviews “Art After the End of the World\,” in which Nowosielski reveals the artist’s perspective on the world. She is the author of the books “Not Only Art. Conversations with Mieczysław Porębski” (1993)\, “Art Reserve. In the Footsteps of Polish Artists of the 20th Century” (2000)\, “Kantor — Painting\, Theatre. A Guide to the Artist’s Work” (2003)\, “Nowosielski” (2006)\, and “A Bat in the Temple. A Biography of Jerzy Nowosielski” (2011).\nShe is the author of more than 300 reviews\, essays\, interviews and academic publications. In 2012\, she was nominated for numerous literary awards\, including the “Nike” Literary Award.\nShe is a member of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA)\, the Association of Art Historians\, and the “Maj 77” Association of Members of the Democratic Opposition. In 2007\, she was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta for her opposition activities in the 1970s.\nOpen Archive is a series of meetings with prominent representatives of contemporary Polish art — artists\, curators\, critics and theorists — launched by the Polish Institute in Kyiv in 2006.
