SUMMARY:Lecture and Presentation of Viktoria Burlaka’s Book “History of the Image. Art of the 2000s”.
DESCRIPTION:The book “History of the Image. Art of the 2000s” was published at the end of 2011 — it is a history of the past decade. One follows the pulsating rhythm of the image’s transformations like Ariadne’s thread through the labyrinth that art seems to be today. Unlike previous periods\, there is no universally recognized “mainstream” that one can easily join. Art has fallen into programmatic eclecticism\, making the rational criteria of contemporaneity unclear. We exist not within a “grand style\,” but within a great cultural fusion\, an age of fusion: everything mixes with everything else\, and everything has a right to exist. Everyone finds in it what interests them personally\, while I was interested in less obvious things. Not the fact that a new critically minded generation emerged in the mid-2000s\, a generation of social performance… But rather how our vision of reality is transformed every day and every second.\n(The book will be available for purchase after the presentation)\nReflecting it in a time of total “derealization” (a term from psychiatry that has migrated into the analysis of art) is a task bordering on the impossible. Reflection equals distortion\, withdrawal into oneself; the early 2000s were a time of cultural escapism. An accurate diagnosis was made in 2005 by the exhibition “Reality Check” at the Ukrainian House — it marked the indistinguishability of the boundary between the internal and the external. The fundamental communicative premise of contemporaneity is that one can speak to a person only in the language of their personal madness. The symptom is the only point of support in an era deprived of dominant narratives\, both ideological and stylistic — the artist’s personal code. ..
