SUMMARY:OPEN CALL FOR 2021. EXHIBITION "FOIL PIGEON AND BLUE GUACHE" MARGO RESNIK
DESCRIPTION:We continue the OPEN CALL program of 2021. The fourth among the exhibitions of the finalists will be the video-art project “pigeon foil and blue gouache” by Margo Reznik.\nFrom the author’s concept:\n“Here are several works made after the start of a full-scale war. In the “alien” series\, I paint my face in blue and walk like that in different places. I did this before the full-scale war in different cities of Ukraine\, and already as a temporarily displaced person\, I shot these videos in different cities in Poland and a little bit in Norway. It’s like the diary of an alien. I like that in English the word “alien” can mean both an alien and a foreigner from another country\, context\, culture\, and I play with these different meanings\, like reflection of this paternalism of a temporarily displaced person in another country.\nAlso\, I have now started working on a series of video reflections on the experience of war awareness\, confrontation with the chaos of reality and the destruction of the illusion of safety\, structure and orderliness of life\, inspired by the laws of the genre of popular culture in which I grew up and which was like my safe place. A slouched femme fatale in a red dress like a cliché image from zombie apocalypse movies. I was celebrating my 30th birthday in a residency in Norway when I shot it\, and it’s about my own little apocalypse of not being able to go back to my old life and having some unrealistic expectations of myself. Retrofuturism. I made myself a costume of an alien cyborg with the vibe of old science fiction and walked like that in Troeshchyna. For me\, it’s about realizing the vulnerability of the body in the context of war. At some point in the beginning\, I thought a lot about the softness of the body and the fact that if something flies into the house\, I will be a mess\, and this cyborg game is a fantasy about being made of a different material. Grass. I grew a grass blanket for myself. This is a bit of a reference to Ukrainian fairy tales\, where if the heroes die unjustly and tragically\, some symbolic plant or tree grows in their place. The last blanket will be made of grass. It’s about the awareness of one’s own mortality\, which for me happened with the beginning of a full-scale war and which seems to be present in every movement in ordinary everyday actions.”
