The “BORDERLAND SPACE” Symposium is Vitaliy Kokhan, who, as a ten-year-old boy, symbolically placed his first land art work on a hillside, and to this day annually explores the Mohrytsia space, not only as an artist, but also as a representative of the curatorial group and coordinator of the symposium in the city of Kharkiv.

It is a constellation of land art stars — Viktoria Teletien, Yurii Shtaida, Yaroslava Maistrenko, Anastasiia Skorikova, Anna Saienko, Tymofii Osipov, who for many years have immersed themselves in the Mohrytsia landscapes and given birth to new creative ideas and images.

It is the students of the Kharkiv Academy of Design, who, in repeated waves of creative experimental exploration, filled
the Mohrytsia hills.

It is the graduates of the Sumy School of Arts and Culture, who continued their art education and realize their professional potential
in Kharkiv, but whose first creative explorations are connected with student plein-air sessions in Mohrytsia.

These are some of the best and most expressive works of land art, which have become part of the history of environmental art in Ukraine and the world, and which were created by artists from Kharkiv.

The digest of the All-Ukrainian Land Art Symposium
“BORDERLAND SPACE” is a journey of exhibition projects
through 6 cities of Ukraine, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the symposium —
Vinnytsia, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, Kyiv, Khmelnytskyi, Lviv.

The first project took place in Vinnytsia during the international winter land art festival “Mythogenesis 2017,” which became a symbolic event — the land art events are united not only by many years of cooperation, but also by two white colors:
in Vinnytsia in winter — snow, in Mohrytsia in summer — chalk.

In each city, the digest of the All-Ukrainian Land Art Symposium will have its own differences and features.

The All-Ukrainian Land Art Symposium “BORDERLAND SPACE” has been held near the village of Mohrytsia in Sumy Oblast
on a chalk plateau near the archaeological site of a Scythian and Slavic settlement since 1997.

The symposium brings together authors from different places within a single space —
renowned land art artists, creative young people and students
from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, Dnipro, Lviv, Uzhhorod, Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Sumy.

The Mohrytsia Land Art Symposium, the first in Ukraine, brought together leading environmental artists and gave impetus to the emergence of similar events in other regions.

“BORDERLAND SPACE” is a land art symposium that strives
to develop a dialogue between humans and the primordial environment, to expand the aesthetic space from the boundary of the artist’s “I-territory” to the landscape space, explores the landscape as an essence — through images, actions, sound, or gestures, provides an opportunity to reveal various philosophical and aesthetic meanings of space that encourage the perception and experience of the landscape as
a creative substance.
