The project “Contemporary Art of Austria. Abstraction from Salzburg” opens our series of posts about the gallery’s second year of exhibitions!

The Municipal Gallery’s exhibition hall presented 49 works by five Austrian artists: Heinrich Dunst, Jakob Gasteiger, Sonja Lixl, Maria-Elisabeth Prigge, and Günter Silva Sedlak. The exhibited works (paintings, drawings, watercolors, collages, and objects) were experiments with form and color. However, despite the diversity of subjects and techniques, abstraction was the unifying principle of the exhibition.

Heinrich Dunst presented small-format watercolors, ink drawings, and mixed-media works, with 9 sheets from this series exhibited for the first time! Jakob Gasteiger presented paintings in which oil paint was applied in thick layers to rough canvas or cardboard.

The youngest of the artists, Sonja Lixl, presented 10 works from the “disci” series: mixed media on paper. Maria-Elisabeth Prigge had been working exclusively on drawings since 1988, and these were presented at the exhibition. Günter Silva Sedlak presented abstract mixed-media works, which were an exception in his artistic practice.

The project “Contemporary Art of Austria. Abstraction from Salzburg” was dedicated to the gallery’s first anniversary, and Harald Fleischmann, Cultural Attaché of the Austrian Embassy in Ukraine, attended its closing ceremony.
