After a forced quarantine break, the exhibition “Figure” will open at the gallery on November 24 as part of the anniversary program “Preserving Kulikov’s Legacy,” initiated by the Municipal Gallery in 2015. The program is an ongoing retrospective of Vitalii Mykolaiovych Kulikov, aimed at revealing the Master’s artistic legacy to the public, presenting and analyzing the artist’s work with its unique style and worldview, not only considering him as an independent artist but also as a representative of the little-studied Kharkiv nonconformist movement of the 1960s–80s.

Vitalii Kulikov (1935-2015) was a renowned Ukrainian artist, painter, graphic artist, book designer and poster artist, professor at the Department of Drawing and Painting at Kharkiv State Technical University of Construction and Architecture, and laureate of the Municipal Prize (2006). Kulikov interpreted and refracted in his work the traditions of the Avant-Garde of the 1910s–20s. A philosophical perspective in his works is combined with clear plastic expression. During his 40 years of teaching, Vitalii Mykolaiovych became a mentor to many students; he was also one of the founders of the “Litera A” creative association.

The exhibition at the Municipal Gallery will feature graphic works with Kulikov’s “models,” video materials about the artist, as well as paintings selected by Vitalii Mykolaiovych himself for the Wikipedia article.
The project will also include a parallel program which, due to the pandemic, is moving from offline to online: curator-led tours, a series of meetings with artists and students of V. Kulikov, a screening of Olena Hryhorieva’s film about V.M. Kulikov, and the unveiling of a memorial plaque.

Exhibition opening hours: Monday-Friday, 11:00 to 19:00.
Saturday and Sunday — CLOSED.
Due to quarantine restrictions, masks are strictly required to enter the exhibition. No more than 4 people may be present in the gallery’s exhibition space at the same time.
