This week we dedicate our posts to reminiscing about the exhibitions of 1999. The cycle begins with two off-site projects that took place in Kyiv: “Three Weeks of the Old Capital” and “Game”.
In February 1999, the MG was invited to the “Soviart” Center for Contemporary Art to present its exhibition program “Three Weeks of the Old Capital” based on the principle of moving from academic art to contemporary art. The program consisted of three independent projects.
The first project, titled “Academy,” included works by well-known Kharkiv artists: Viktor Goncharov, Vachagan Norazyan, Eduard Yashin, Vitaliy Kulikov, Olena Kudynova, Natalia Myronenko, Volodymyr Bondarenko, Oleksandr Kovalov, and Oleksandr Ridnyy.
The second part of the exhibition program, titled “Continuum of Processes,” consisted of works by Oleksiy Yesiunin, Oleksandr Ridnyy, Yevhen Svitlychnyy, Volodymyr Shaposhnikov, and Andriy Avdeenko.
The third part, “Ultra,” presented works of contemporary art – visual objects, ultraviolet painting, and body art. The core of the exhibition was the non-traditional painting with the use of the ultraviolet effect by Boris Zenin and the visual objects of Oleksiy Borysov.
The “Game” project was presented at the IV International Art Festival in the “Ukrainian House” exhibition center. The participants of the project were Vachagan Norazyan, Oleksandr Vlasenko, Eduard Yashin, Dmytro Danysh, Iryna and Igor Ilyinskis, Tagui Barsegyan, Oleksandr Ridnyy, Igor Chursin, Iryna Olenina, Ortem Hostyev, and, in particular, a guest from Moscow – artist Shamil Nadrov.
In addition to the main exhibition, the project included a happening, photo contests, and jazz improvisations performed by saxophonist Oleksandr Fursa. All parts of the exhibition were interconnected in an ideological composition and were truly perceived as a “Game”.
