2001: Andrzej Strumiłło, “Dialogue with Others”

“We would like to conclude our journey through 2001 with a discussion of Andrzej Strumiłło’s exhibition, “Dialogue with Others.” Considered a master of contemporary Polish art, Strumiłło’s exhibition was organized with the support of the Polish Consulate General as part of the “Contemporary Foreign Art” program.

Throughout his prolific career, Strumiłło has held over a hundred solo exhibitions in Poland and abroad, including Warsaw, Wrocław, Kraków, Łódź, Katowice, Olsztyn, Toruń, Beijing, Tokyo, Berlin, Bremen, Prague, Bratislava, Moscow, Leningrad, Vilnius, and New York.

His numerous travels have provided him with both philosophical and artistic concepts, realized in his drawings and photographs, as well as ethnographic materials that have formed the basis of his collection at the Warsaw Museum of Asia and the Pacific.

In June 2001, Kharkiv residents had the opportunity to see over 50 works by this outstanding master. Strumiłło has developed a strong connection with our city. In the early 2000s, the Kharkiv Municipal Gallery showcased several more of his projects, and in turn, the Polish artist invited a Kharkiv photographer to a residency.

The artist himself said about his works: “My art is on the verge of contemplating the silence of such elementary signs as a dot, square, rhombus, and the scream of violently shattered matter.”

Andrzej Strumiłło was a multifaceted individual. He also created sculptures and objects, paintings, graphics, drawings, photographs, illustrations, and worked in exhibition design and scenography.

In 2020, Andrzej Strumiłło passed away. According to Andriy Kutil, Strumiłło did not sell the paintings he created in the last years of his life to private collections but “left them for eternity.” Money no longer mattered to him. He purposefully worked to ensure that the paintings would go to museums and be shown to people.
