In 2014, the Municipal Gallery hosted the exhibition “Fluxus Time.” The Fluxus-inspired exhibition reconstructed projects, videos, and computer presentations by artists whose modes and forms of artistic expression belonged to the movement that emerged in the early 1960s.
Fluxus became an artistic concept that united artists working in different parts of the world on the same question: how to combine art and everyday life in a continuous flow of creativity? The main goal was to merge various forms of artistic expression and means of communication: concrete and electronic music, visual poetry, movement, and symbolic gestures. The main principle for the artists was absolute spontaneity, arbitrariness, and rejection of any limitations, achieved through such forms as happenings, décollage, various street actions, and anti-theater.
The curator of the project was New York-based artist Irina Danilova, who also gave a lecture-presentation titled “Fluxus Time.” The audience was shown many archival documents and testimonies about one of the most powerful phenomena of the 20th century. The day after the opening, fragments of the new (unfinished) film “George Maciunas” by Jeff Perkins were shown.
The exhibition showcased works by 20 artists, including well-known names such as Yoko Ono, George Maciunas – the founder of Fluxus, and Kharkiv artist Vagrich Bakhchanyan.
