Kicking off the year 2015 is Kyiv-based artist, photographer, and performance artist Ani Zur with her project “Fertility”.
In her series of photographs, the artist turned to the mythology and everyday life of ancient Slavic women to reinterpret their role in contemporary society. Growing up in a matriarchal family, Ani Zur spent four years photographing women from her circle, relatives, daughters, and herself. As an attempt at self-identification, working on the “Fertility” series prompted the artist to reflect on the “feminine mission” and the intuitive component of the female essence, which is lost with the development of civilization.
As part of the exhibition, Ani Zur performed her performance “Underground,” which continued the theme of the woman’s sacred connection to the earth. For about 40 minutes, the artist lay in a wooden box underground, from which a fruit tree sapling grew. Thus visualizing, on the one hand, the natural connection between Mother Earth and the young generation, to which the earth must transfer its strength and energy. On the other hand, the sacrifice and humility of a woman who raises offspring and is completely ‘immersed’ in this process.
