“25 EVENTFUL WEEKS”

The sixth of our “25 Eventful Weeks” concludes with the Ukrainian-German art project “Understanding”, which took place as part of the “German Weeks. Kharkiv” program. Eight Kharkiv artists participated in the program (Yuliana Alimova, BOBA Group, Hamlet Zinkivskyi, Kostiantyn Zorkin, Vladyslav Krasnoshchok, Vitalii Kokhan, Daria Rakova and Oksana Solop), jointly curated by Imke Rust (Berlin, Germany) and the Municipal Gallery.

The aim of the project was to establish a dialogue between representatives of different countries, cultures and social groups. The curators proceeded from the idea that art is a unique form of communication: it encourages dialogue not only between the artist and the viewer, but also between people within society. Therefore, “Understanding” involved interaction between art objects and public space, thereby engaging the city’s audience in dialogue.

The project program included installations, objects, performances, actions, street art and original banners. Hamlet created a series of street art works located throughout the city, while BOBA Group presented the performance “Party of Capelin” – an honest election campaign. Kostiantyn Zorkin presented the interactive installation “Negative Space”, while Daria Rakova created an installation from objects passed from one person to another.

Vladyslav Krasnoshchok presented a work from the “Negatives Are Preserved” series – a reinterpretation and reworking of the history of generations, while Oksana Solop placed her object “Many-Faced” near the Municipal Gallery. Yuliana Alimova transformed the public space on Vorobiova Street, while Vitalii Kokhan even released fish into the fountain located near the Land Bank!

All the works were presented on the same day in different parts of Kharkiv.
