In 2016, the Municipal Gallery celebrated its 20th anniversary, so the exhibition program was carefully curated. Viewers were offered projects by artists who had collaborated with the Municipal Gallery since its inception. Alexander Ridny’s exhibition was undoubtedly a must-have for that year, as the artist had collaborated with the gallery from its earliest years.
The sculptor decided to keep the intrigue of the project, and even the gallery staff didn’t know what would be presented until the exhibition was installed the day before the opening. And there was indeed much to hide.
For example, the artist presented two figures that resembled large clay milk jugs, but they had distinct gender characteristics: one had two tennis balls glued to the top, while the other, turned upside down, had balls glued to the bottom.
Next to them was a bright green beetle, resembling a car. And on the second floor of the gallery, visitors could observe how a sculpture of a large onion was taking root in an ordinary three-liter jar.
There was also an interactive part of the exhibition with a wooden sculpture titled “The Butcher”: next to the meat cleaver on its back lay a wrapped chicken carcass, and if a viewer pressed on its belly, it would let out 2016: 20th Anniversary of the Municipal Gallery and Alexander Ridny’s exhibitiona loud scream. The artist had specially purchased a rubber chicken to realize his idea.
