“25 Eventful Weeks”. We open 2018 with major changes for the Municipal Gallery! For more than 20 years, the Municipal Gallery occupied a cozy but intimate two-story space. Unfortunately, the second floor severely limited the possibility of exhibiting large-scale works, so the decision was made to create a classic “white cube”.
The reconstruction of the gallery space was accompanied by the opening of the “City XA” project, which by that time had already been successfully launched at the National Art Museum of Ukraine in Kyiv, although the exhibition was partially modified for the Kharkiv audience. The main idea remained the same: the three components of Kharkiv avant-garde art — sign, text and symbol. Even in the modified version of the exhibition, the curators also drew parallels between different groups and generations of Kharkiv artists.
“Today we are not simply opening a new exhibition, but rather showing a fragment of it and the possibilities of the new exhibition space. Of course, it is still small, but we have accomplished what we had been striving for over many years together with artist and designer Olena Kudinova, who laid the foundation for this project. Together with our team of artists, we conceived the idea of creating a gallery «white cube» as a professional exhibition space” (Tetiana Tumasian).
