2018: Reconstruction of the Municipal Gallery space. “White Cube”

We are starting 2018 with a major transformation of the Municipal Gallery! For over 20 years, the gallery has been a cozy but small two-story space. Unfortunately, the second floor limited the possibility of exhibiting large-scale works, so it was decided to create a classic “white cube.”

The reconstruction of the gallery space coincided with the opening of the “City XA” project, which had already been successfully launched at the National Art Museum of Ukraine in Kyiv. However, the exhibition was partially modified for Kharkiv residents. The main idea remained unchanged: the three components of Kharkiv’s avant-garde art – sign, text, and symbol. But in the modified version of the exhibition, the curators also drew parallels between groups and generations of Kharkiv artists.

“Today we are not just opening a new exhibition, but rather showing a fragment of it and the possibilities of a new exhibition space. Of course, it is still small, but we have done what we have been striving for many years together with the artist and designer Olena Kudynova, who laid the foundation for this project. Together with our team of authors, we conceived of creating a gallery “white cube” for a professional exhibition space” (Tetyana Tumasyan).
