At the end of 2025, we launched an open call for artists from different cities, working across various techniques and genres.

BROKEN WINDOW THEORY is a project about art that emerges where urban space is subjected to destruction. In Kharkiv, windows shattered by explosions are covered with OSB boards — temporary, utilitarian materials intended to protect spaces from further damage. It is precisely on these surfaces that drawings, graffiti, texts, poetry, and gestures of remembrance appear.

In this way, a temporary structure becomes an artistic medium, while the urban space turns into a kind of open gallery where art records the experience of war, trauma, loss, and resistance.

The project explores these practices as an important phenomenon of contemporary Ukrainian culture and seeks to preserve what may disappear as the city is rebuilt.

By the deadline — April 25 — we had received 197 applications from talented artists. With heavy hearts and after intense discussions, we selected 28 winners. The exhibition program will unfold in mid-August. In the meantime, throughout August, we will introduce you to the participating artists and their works. To be continued …
