The year 2019 – or 6769 according to the Assyrian calendar — serves as the starting point for a project
about the complex nature of cultural self-identification. Margo Sarkisova asks herself:
“Why did the world in which I grew up shape me the way it did? What do I accept, and what do I
recoil from? What does family mean? Who have I become?”

As the concept states: “Native culture as both a source of strength and a source of trauma — this polarity of experience creates the inner pulse of the exhibition «6769». Margo does not look toward attractive and elevated images from books; the nerve of her works is life itself, an imprint of everyday perception.”

The exhibition will feature a series of graphic works centered around «Initiation» — 5
large graphic pieces that tell the story of a journey through difficult changes. The exhibition will also include the artist’s personal artifacts related to Assyrian culture
and her family.

«6769» is a project about a journey of difficult decisions, self-deconstruction, and finding oneself. “On the one hand, the artist acknowledges her departure from the circle of her own culture, unwilling to accept the full burden of its traditions and conventions; on the other hand, she cannot and does not want to sever her connection with her native world.”

Margo Sarkisova, born in 1997.
Assyrian artist of Ukrainian origin.
Lives and works in Kharkiv.
Graduate of the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts (I. Yakhin’s studio).
Finalist of the Nathan Altman Contemporary Visual Art Competition
in 2017 and 2018, participant in the PRINTFEST_100 festival, and selected for an international group
exhibition at the International Print Center New York (USA) in January 2020.
