OPEN CALL FOR 2021. EXHIBITION “IMMERSING YOURSELF: A METHOD OF EXPLORATION” VITALIA SHCHELKANOV, PAVLO LUGOVY, MARYNA SHTANKO, RITA NIKI
02.03.2024 - 30.03.2024

Group project of OPEN CALL 2021 finalists.
The authors’ research covers the period from the initial isolation measures during the COVID-19 pandemic to the complete transformation of isolation under the influence of bloody war and its terrible consequences. The process of long-term and systematic self-reflection, during which artists actively explore their own thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values, strengths and weaknesses, is reflected in photographs that will tell you about new contexts of reality. Find out what happens when you are alone and how it affects your world.
From artists’ concepts:
Vitaliya Shchelkanova: “…I had to explore completely foreign spaces, while the connection with my own was broken for an indefinite period. We talked about the feeling of home, about the things we took with us in “anxious suitcases”, we shared our stories with each other – and this created a connection: between man and man, between man and space, between man and reality.”
Pavlo Lugovy: “A person seeks pleasure outside of reality, enjoying a fictional world filled with social and religious values. The latest technologies immerse us in a closed space, keep us where we are always alone with ourselves and our imagination, where phobias rule over everything. This project is a self-portrait and the result of the author’s personal research on how civilizational processes affect a person…”
Rita Niki: “… Photographs celebrate everyday life, happiness from a slow life and strive for timeless carefreeness. And if Lingua Adamica is the first language, then the project “Lingua Adamica” is the search for the first photographic language.
Maryna Shtanko: “…In this project, I tried to imagine a world in which the fusion of different cultures takes place much earlier – immediately after the Second World War, as if the Cold War never existed. American pop art comic book culture recreated by Roy Lichtenstein merges with Soviet photographs of everyday life from my family archive…”
