At the end of 2025, we launched an open call for artists from different cities, working in different techniques and genres.
THEORY OF THE BROKEN WINDOW is a project about art that emerges where urban space undergoes destruction. In Kharkiv, windows shattered by explosions are covered with OSB boards — temporary and utilitarian materials intended to protect the space from further destruction. And it is precisely on these surfaces that drawings, graffiti, texts, poetry, and gestures of remembrance appear.
Thus, a temporary structure becomes an artistic medium, and the urban space becomes a kind of open gallery where art records the experience of war, trauma, loss, and resistance.
The project explores these practices as an important phenomenon of contemporary Ukrainian culture and seeks to preserve what may disappear along with the restoration of the city.
By the deadline — April 25 — we received 197 applications from talented artists. With heavy hearts and heated discussions, we selected 28 winners. The exhibition program will unfold in mid-August. In the meantime, throughout August, we will introduce you to the participants of the exhibition and their works. To be continued …
