Continuing our narrative of 2012, we would like to highlight the exhibitions of artists who made a significant contribution to the city’s creative life and are long-standing authors and friends of the gallery.
The exhibition “Non-Format” by Vaghagan Norazyan took place, marking his last solo project at the gallery and in Kharkiv. Interestingly, Norazyan initially did not connect his works into a unified project: some were fragments of previous exhibitions, while others were entirely new paintings from his studio. However, the exhibition formed an amazingly coherent artistic statement.
Eduard Yashin presented his solo project “Portal,” which had previously been exhibited in Moscow. In the works exhibited at the Municipal Gallery, Kharkiv residents could see depictions of doors: “After all, any door, even a barn door, is always a portal – a symbol of entry and exit,” the artist says about this series.
Another important project for the Municipal Gallery was the retrospective exhibition of the “Litera-A” artists: V. Kulikov, A. Borysov, S. Bratkov, A. Yesiunin, A. Pichachchi, and A. Gladkiy. The project was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the group’s activity. The works of the “Litera-A” artists had not been exhibited together for 10 years. The Municipal Gallery’s anniversary exhibition featured works from the 80s, 90s, and contemporary pieces.
