2006: Boris Kosarev with a personal exhibition of photographs “The Beginning of the 20th Century”.

We are starting 2006 with a large-scale personal exhibition of photographs “The Beginning of the 20th Century” by Boris Kosarev (1897-1994)!

Boris Vasilyevich Kosarev is one of the most outstanding domestic set designers and artists of the 20s-40s of the 20th century, a symbolic figure for our city. Before the revolution, he painted churches and was one of the creators of the Kharkiv Cubo-Futurist group “Soyuz Semy”. He worked closely with young writers of that time, designing collections of poetry by Mayakovsky, Khlebnikov, and Pasternak. And the main occupation in the artist’s life was the theater, where he was able to design many outstanding performances. In addition, Kosarev was a master of photography, which has great historical and cultural value.

The exhibition of our legendary compatriot includes his unique photographs, preserved in the family archive and reproduced from glass negatives of the early 20th century, in particular: Kharkiv and Odessa in the first years after the revolution, the Sorochynsky Fair in 1929 (the last before collectivization) and how Alexander Dovzhenko filmed the movie “Zemlya”.

The exhibition itself was dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the MG and then the gallery team for the first time showed Kosarev as a photographer!
